Big Spring Creek is legendary among fly anglers and
considered one of the best limestone spring creeks in
Southcentral Pennsylvania. Big Spring emerges at full
flow from a spring just outside the borough of Newville,
Pennsylvania. Big Spring is a scenic stream that flows
through a combination of farmland, residential areas and
wetlands until it reaches the town of Newville and
eventually flows into the Conodoguinet River. The trout in
Big Spring grow large because they have plenty of food to
eat. Big Spring is loaded with with Scuds and Sow Bugs as
well as Blue Wing Olives, Sulphurs, Caddis and Sculpins.
Hatches on Big Spring are not prolific but there is enough
insect activity to keep an angler occupied and bring large
and wary trout to the surface. The abundant food supply
is which causes difficulty for anglers in catching these
fish. The trout in Big Spring feed when they want, not
when you want them to.
Big Spring is one of the best Brook Trout fisheries in
Pennsylvania and in the ditch area there are more Brook
Trout per acre than any other stream in Pennsylvania.
There is also a large population of stream-bred Rainbow
Trout which appears to be quickly displacing the Brook
Trout. There are Brown Trout in Big Spring Creek but
you will be hard pressed to catch them because they are
few. Cumberland Valley Trout Unlimited and Big Spring
Watershed Association have been instrumental in helping
to return Big Spring Creek to its rightful place as one of
Pennsylvania’s top spring creeks.
